Day 2 :Marrakech (City Tour)

On this 11-day tour from Chefchaouen to Tangier, an exciting day awaits in Marrakech, where the city’s vibrant sights and sounds will enchant you. Start with a morning tour visiting the Bahia Palace and Dar Si Said, known for their intricate tilework and beautifully painted wooden ceilings. Then, discover Berber culture at the Tiskiwin Museum, where you will find authentic tents, carpets, basketwork, and ancient jewelry. Continue to Dar El Bacha, one of Marrakech’s most beautiful palaces, showcasing multicolored mosaics and traditional Berber-style architecture. Finally, explore Jemaa El Fna Square, where juice stalls, water sellers, snake charmers, and entertainers fill the square during the day. In the evening, the square comes alive with dancers, storytellers, and magicians. Overnight at the riad.

Day 3 – July 26

Day 3 :Marrakech to Boumalen Dades.

We depart early from your hotel or riad in Marrakech. On the way to Skoura Valley, we cross the High Atlas Mountains, reaching an altitude of 2,260 meters and offering breathtaking views. Our first stop is the Kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where a local guide will take you through the site, followed by lunch nearby.

The Kasbah is a cluster of small fortified buildings, some reaching 10 meters high. While most residents now live in the modern village, eight families still live within the old Kasbah. This iconic site has appeared in famous films such as Lawrence of Arabia and Gladiator.

After lunch, we continue to the Dades Valley, nestled between the High Atlas and Jbel Saghro Mountains. Known as the “Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs,” the area is filled with historic kasbahs and lush oases.

Our journey continues through the Dades Gorge and Todra Gorges, famous for their dramatic canyon walls. The deep valley creates a spectacular atmosphere, with sunlight barely reaching some parts of the gorge and the river running through the canyon. We will stay overnight in the area, with dinner at the riad.

Day 4 – July 27

Day 4 :Boumalen Dades to Merzouga.

Start your day with breakfast at the hotel, enjoying the incredible views of the Dades Valley.

Next, we drive from Todra to explore the Moroccan Grand Canyon. Afterward, we will enjoy lunch in the canyon area before continuing our journey to Merzouga.

Following lunch, we head toward Merzouga, with a stop to explore the old desert tunnels built around the 14th century to access and collect water from underground rivers. We then continue to Erfoud, the last city before reaching Merzouga.

Upon arrival in Merzouga, your camels will be ready for a one-hour ride through the dunes to your desert camp. You will enjoy dinner in the desert, followed by traditional Berber music around the fire under the stars. Finally, you will retire to your comfortable Berber tent for the night.

Day 5 – July 28

Day 5 :Merzouga to Fez

Wake up early to catch the sunrise from the top of a sand dune. Afterward, enjoy breakfast and a final hour of camel riding back to our vehicle in Merzouga. We then begin our journey to Fez, with beautiful landscapes and memorable stops along the way.

Our first stop will be Midelt, a charming town nestled between the Middle and High Atlas Mountains, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape.

We then continue to Ifrane, a small hill town with a Swiss alpine feel. Surrounded by natural areas such as Ifrane National Park and the Cedar Forest, Ifrane is known for its cool climate and abundant snow during the winter.

As we drive through the area, you will have the opportunity to see the impressive cedar forests and Barbary macaques, which live in this region.

By the end of the day, we will arrive in Fez, where I will drop you off at your riad for the evening.

Day 6 – July 29

Day 6 :Fez City Tour

After breakfast, we will begin your guided tour with our local guide, taking advantage of the peaceful morning atmosphere as the Medina slowly comes to life and the shopkeepers begin opening their doors. The cool morning breeze and quieter streets make this the perfect time to discover Fès el-Bali, the oldest part of the city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We will walk through its narrow lanes and lively souks, where you will see spices, dried fruits, leather, traditional crafts, and local workshops. Along the way, we will visit Bab Boujloud, the Mellah, Al Quaraouiyine, and Medersa Bou Inania, before continuing to the famous Chouara Tanneries, where leather is still produced using traditional methods passed down through generations.

You will also have time to discover the artisan workshops and souks, giving you a closer look at the daily life and craftsmanship that make Fez one of Morocco’s most fascinating cities.

Chefchaouen Street

Day 7 – July 30

Day 7 :Fez to Chefchaouen

After breakfast in Fez, we will head toward Chefchaouen, with stops along the way at Sidi Chahed Lake and Ouazzane. We will arrive in Chefchaouen around lunchtime and enjoy a meal at an open-air café in the famous Outa el Hammam Square.

Nestled between the peaks of the Rif Mountains, Chefchaouen is one of Morocco’s most charming towns, famous for its blue-and-white houses, colorful doors, and Andalusian influence. After lunch, you will have time to explore the beautiful Medina, discover its local shops and handicrafts, and visit the Kasbah and its ethnographic museum, where you can also enjoy wonderful views over the town.

The rest of the afternoon and evening will be free for you to wander through the blue streets, relax in the square, and enjoy Chefchaouen at your own pace.

Asilah to Tangier

Day 8 – July 31

Day 8 :Chefchaouen to Tangier

Today, after breakfast in Chefchaouen, we will head toward Tangier, with a stop in Tetouan, a charming town near Tangier. We will have about an hour to explore the old Medina and take some pictures of its most famous sights before continuing our drive to Tangier.

Upon arrival, you will have the rest of the day free to relax and enjoy your riad, located inside the old Medina with a beautiful view of the Mediterranean. Overnight at the hotel.

Tangier Sea

Day 9 – August 1

Day 9 :Tangier City Tour

After breakfast, we will begin your exploration of Tangier, starting with a drive through some of the city’s most interesting neighborhoods and scenic viewpoints. We will continue to Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, followed by a visit to the legendary Caves of Hercules.

We will then explore the Kasbah, walking through its narrow streets and historic walls while discovering its beautiful Arab-Andalusian architecture. From there, we will continue into the Medina, where you can experience the local atmosphere, traditional markets, artisan shops, and daily life.

You will have time to enjoy the city at your own pace before returning to your hotel or hotel.

Day 10 – August 2

Day 10:Eclipse Morning–Tangier to Casablanca

Today is the highlight of your journey: the Total Solar Eclipse of August 2, 2027. After breakfast, you will have the morning free to enjoy this extraordinary event from Tangier or the surrounding northern coast.

Tangier and the Bay of Tangier offer almost five minutes of totality, making this one of the best areas in Morocco to experience the eclipse. You will have the freedom to choose where you would like to watch the eclipse, whether from Tangier, one of the beaches along the coast such as Achakar Beach, or another suitable location you prefer.

Achakar Beach, located just outside Tangier on the Atlantic coast, offers an open horizon and is an excellent option for eclipse viewing. Alternatively, if you prefer to stay further inland, you can choose an area around the Rif Mountains or Chefchaouen, where the totality is shorter but the higher elevation may offer different weather conditions.

After enjoying the eclipse and taking some time to relax and have lunch, we will leave Tangier in the afternoon and drive south toward Casablanca. I will make sure you are comfortable during the journey, and we will arrive in Casablanca in the evening, where you will check in at your hotel and spend your final night in Morocco.

(The exact viewing location is entirely your choice. I will be happy to help you choose the location that suits you best, while making sure everything is well organized and that you can simply enjoy this very special moment.)

Book Your Eclipse Tour

Spaces on eclipse tours will be extremely limited. Genuine Morocco recommends enquiring as early as possible, demand for the 2027 eclipse across northern Morocco is already building significantly.

Need Answers to your questions?

The basics

The total solar eclipse happens on Monday, August 2, 2027. Yes — the Moon’s shadow sweeps across northern Morocco. Morocco is one of the more accessible places on the entire path.

Tangier and Tetouan both sit inside the ~236 km-wide totality band, with the centerline passing just south of Tangier. Chefchaouen, a bit further from the centerline, still gets over four minutes of totality.

Rabat, Casablanca, and Marrakech are outside the path — they’ll see a deep partial eclipse, but the sun will never fully disappear there. If seeing totality is the point of the trip, plan to be north of these cities.

GenuineMorocco plans your tours to be in the path of totality.

Around 4 minutes 50 seconds in Tangier and Tetouan, and roughly 4 minutes 14 seconds in Chefchaouen. That’s a long totality by eclipse standards — for comparison, the 2024 US eclipse topped out around 4.5 minutes at its very best spot.

In the Tangier area, the eclipse runs from roughly 8:33 AM to 11:09 AM WEST, with totality itself arriving around 9:44 AM. It’s a morning event, which matters for planning — you’ll want to be at your viewing spot well before sunrise-adjacent crowds and traffic build up.

Choosing where to go

Tangier is the natural gateway — international airport, ferry links to Spain, and it sits right in the path — but it will also be the most crowded and most expensive spot on eclipse morning. Tetouan and Chefchaouen offer very similar totality durations with a smaller-city feel; Chefchaouen’s blue-washed medina is also just a striking place to be regardless of the eclipse.

If you fly into Casablanca or Marrakech instead of Tangier, that’s no problem — GenuineMorocco will have you transported north to your viewing site by private car or small van, so you don’t have to sort out your own transfer into the totality band.

Early August in northern Morocco is generally dry, but coastal spots near the Strait of Gibraltar (including Tangier) carry some risk of morning marine cloud or haze. Locations a bit further inland tend to have better clear-sky odds. Whatever site GM picks, we keep a backup viewing location in mind and watch the short-range forecast in the days just before.

Yes — those cities lie outside the totality band but will still see a substantial partial eclipse. It’s a real astronomical event worth watching, but it is not the same experience as totality: the sky doesn’t darken, the temperature drop and corona aren’t visible, and you must keep solar glasses on the entire time. If totality is the goal, budget travel time north.

Viewing safely

Yes. Wear ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses for every partial phase — before and after totality. The only moment it’s safe to look with the naked eye is during totality itself, when the Moon fully covers the Sun’s disc. In Tangier, that window is roughly 4 minutes 50 seconds; glasses go back on the instant the first sliver of sun reappears.

Regular sunglasses, smartphone camera screens, and homemade filters are not safe substitutes — buy glasses from a reputable eclipse supplier ahead of time, since local stock can sell out as the date approaches. GenuineMorocco will provide each guest with certified viewing glasses.

Both are reasonable choices, but first-timers often regret spending all of totality fiddling with a camera. If you do want photos, use a solar filter on your lens for the partial phases, practice your setup beforehand, and consider setting a phone or camera to auto-capture so your eyes are free during the main event.

Planning the trip

As early as you reasonably can. This is a widely anticipated eclipse and northern Morocco has a limited hotel base, so accommodation inside or near the totality band is expected to fill up and rise in price well ahead of August 2027. Aim to arrive by July 31 or August 1 to allow a buffer day for scouting your exact viewing spot and checking last-minute weather.

It depends on your passport — Morocco allows visa-free tourist entry for many nationalities (including the US, UK, EU, and Canada) for stays up to 90 days, but rules vary by country and can change. Check current requirements with the Moroccan consulate or your government’s travel advisory site closer to your trip rather than relying on older information.

A few things eclipse travelers to Morocco commonly flag: the local currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD), which is largely a closed currency — you’ll mostly exchange it at a bank cash machine. Bring your bank card. August and late July will be hot throughout Morocco. Plan on wearing light clothes that cover your legs and arms, bring a hat, and sunglasses for other than when gazing at the eclipse. You should also be prepared with sunscreen.

Plenty of travelers are building a longer trip around eclipse morning rather than flying in just for the day. GenuineMorocco.com runs private, customizable tours from 2 days up to a full 21-day journey covering the imperial cities (Marrakech, Fez, Rabat, Casablanca), the High Atlas and Rif mountains, Sahara desert camps around Merzouga and Erg Chebbi, and coastal towns like Essaouira — all of which sit south of the totality band.

A common pattern: start in Marrakech, work through the desert and Atlas Mountains on one of their 7- to 14-day itineraries, then finish by heading north to Tangier, Tetouan, or Chefchaouen in time to be settled in before eclipse morning on August 2. Since they don’t currently list a fixed eclipse package, contact us directly at info@GenuineMorocco.com to have a custom-timed itinerary to end at a specially chosen totality site for you or your group.

Just as workable — treat the totality band as your starting point instead of your finish line. After watching the eclipse from Tangier, Tetouan, or Chefchaouen, you’d head south into the rest of the country: the blue streets of Chefchaouen if you haven’t lingered there yet, Fez’s medina and tanneries, Marrakech, and on to the Atlas Mountains and Sahara camps.

GenuineMorocco.com can build this as a private post-eclipse extension using the same multi-day itineraries (their 3-day Marrakech-to-Merzouga desert route or the longer 10- to 16-day options work well tacked on afterward). Reach out ahead of time — at +1 202-497-9633 (mobile or WhatsApp) or info@GenuineMorocco.com — since early August will be in peak demand for anything touching the area of totality, and having the rest of the trip mapped out in advance means one less thing to plan the morning after a 4-minute totality.
